Sigiriya is an ancient fortress built on a gigantic rock which is by King Kashyapa, who reigned in the kingdom of Anuradhapura long ago.

The name Sigiriya was not the original name of it. Its name “Sinha Giri” means Sinha (Lion) – Giri (rock) in Sinhala. However, as time went on, the name Sigiriya became popular among every local citizen.

 This was once listed as one of the world wonders in and still, it remains as a world heritage site named by UNESCO.

Sigiriya is located in Malate district Srilanka, and to be exact it is in the northern Matale district. It is close to the town of Dambulla which belongs to the Central Province.

The ancient chronicle of Srilanka the choolawansha provides more information about Sigiriya. King Kashyapa had selected this gigantic rock as his capital. He had been a person who loved fresco paintings very much. So, he decorated his fortress with amazing and great fresco paintings.

This place is open for visiting from 7 am until 5.30 pm. The visiting fee is about 50 Srilankan rupees for local visitors and about 5000 Srilankan rupees for all the foreigners. If you are planning to climb up the Sigiriya, morning time would be the best. It would nearly take an hour to reach the top of the rock from the bottom.
