Srilanka is one of the most beautiful islands in the whole world. This beautiful island is also called "The pearl of the Indian Ocean", as it is surrounded by the Indian Ocean. Srilanka is bordered by the Indian Ocean, Gulf strait and Mannar bay.

This beautiful island has a very long history which runs back thousands of years. Srilanka was ruled by a long list of kings from history. However, This country faced changes in its culture when different people related to various nationalities migrated from neighboring India. However, "Wadiga" (Tamil) kings who belonged to the "Nayakkar" dynasty, later ruled this country.

History of Srilanka

Srilanka is still world-famous for its tasty tea leaves. The brand name "Ceylon tea" is very well known by almost every tea lover in the world. These high-quality tea leaves are grown in tea estates which are located on the high lands of this country.

This country is very much rich in its bio-diversity and high lands that have a very cold climate in comparison to the other low lands, are abound with tea estates. Apart from these, Srilanka was also famous for its high-quality spices like cinnamon.

The great demand everyone in the world had towards Srilankan spices, impressed and motivated foreigners in invading Srilanka and earn money by exporting Srilankan spices to the world. As a result of that, several countries attacked Srilanka.

In 1505 Portuguese arrived at Srilanka and they wagged war against the native kingdoms. Portuguese named this beautiful island as "Srilanka".

Portuguese people expanded their colony day by day, the native kingdom was at the brim of collapsing down. During this time the Dutch invaded Srilanka and fought against the Portuguese for the power of the country.

The king signed a treaty with the dutch and helped the Dutch to fight against the Portuguese and as a result, the Dutch won the war. Later the British also invaded and established their power in Srilanka. However, Srilanka won independence on the 4th of February 1948.
